As Autumn rolls in and the temperature begins to drop, it becomes time to break out your Autumnal wardrobe essentials. As well as to begin shopping around for some new pieces to add to your closet for the colder months. Admittedly, my Fall and Winter wardrobes heavily cross over into one another. Which is honestly the beauty of owning such versatile pieces. And despite the fact that I tend to dress more for my mood than the weather, I look forward to when it becomes socially acceptable to begin wearing my more Autumnal pieces again. Especially since you can get quite creative with layering in the Autumn and Winter months.
Honestly, a key element of my own Autumnal wardrobe essentials is layerability. Especially as the temperature can fluctuate significantly in the Fall. In the Midwest, it isn’t uncommon for it to feel a bit chilly in the morning, and for it to feel like Summer in the afternoon. So it’s ideal to be able to remove some layers and still have a complete look. Besides, layering various Autumnal pieces is quite a fun way to get creative with your look in the Fall. Especially when you bring in your own personal style when choosing your Autumnal wardrobe essentials. Rather than just following the current seasonal trends.
1 — Sweaters and Knitted Styles
Sweaters are an iconic staple of Fall. That said, it goes without saying that they are one of the top Autumnal wardrobe essentials that everyone should have. Seriously, we should all have at least one sweater, sweater dress, or knitted cardigan in our collection! Knitted fashion items are so cozy, and there are so many different styles of knits that we can choose from when choosing new sweaters to add to our collection. This isn’t to mention that sweaters come in a wide variety of colors, so we don’t necessarily need to stick to a neutral color palette. Some sweaters are patterned, and some even have lovely additional detailing.
I personally own quite a few different knitted pieces. Some are thinner to suit the temperature fluctuations in early Autumn. Whilst others are thicker and warmer. A few of my sweaters and sweater dresses are form-fitted to create a more elegant look. Whilst others are slightly looser for a cosier vibe. And while I certainly love sweaters in neutral colors, I also have quite a few colorful pieces for when I’m craving a pop of fun color. Some of my cardigans and sweater dresses even work well for Spring!
2 — Blazers and Suit Jackets
Not only are blazers and suit jackets perfect for the office, but they also make for the perfect elegant light jacket in the Autumnal months. I often find that a nice blazer is just enough to cover my arms on slightly chilly and breezy days. Whilst also not being too much to wear indoors or keep on as the temperature rises. A nice suit jacket or blazer also looks lovely with a fitted sweater or sweater dress, to create a lovely layered look. Blazers are also perfect for dressing up a nice basic T-shirt. Honestly, blazers and suit jackets are quite versatile Autumnal wardrobe essentials to have in your closet.
And once again, blazers and suit jackets come in a wide variety of styles and colors. Some are quite Autumnal, whereas others can be worn year-round. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to blazers and suit jackets. So be on the lookout for which suit best suits you.
3 — Peacoats and Overcoats
I’m not going to lie, I tend to break out my peacoats and overcoats quite late into Autumn and wear them through the Winter. Honestly, breaking my warmer jackets out feels like surrendering to the colder weather. But I know that I’m not doing myself any favors by not wearing overwear, and I’m only making myself endure feeling the cold even more. On the bright side, I must say that peacoats and overcoats can be quite classy and chic. And despite what they represent to me (the colder weather), I do love the ones that I own. I also love that they’re long enough to still go well with a midi-dress, and still be sleek and chic.
I’ll be honest, I don’t own many overcoats, and I tend to buy them in neutral tones so they’re more versatile. Primarily because they can be pricer than other garments. But don’t let that stop you from purchasing your dream peacoat in a fun color or pattern.
4 — Leather Jackets
As a girly with a little bit of an alternative and edgy side, I love finding ways to incorporate a little bit of edginess into my style. And leather jackets allow me to do just that, in the subtlest of ways. Needless to say, as the temperature begins to drop, I love incorporating my leather jackets into my fashion looks. I’ll even plan my entire outfit around a leather jacket in the Fall. Leather jackets the one of the few pieces of outerwear I get fully excited to break out. I’ll even wear them indoors and out, throughout the day. And of course, if it does get too warm, they’re also easy to take off and set aside.
Honestly, leather jackets aren’t just an essential for your Autumnal closet. They’re also a staple piece to have if you have even the slightest edgy side.
5 — Leather, Suede, and Fleece-Lined Boots
Boots are another iconic staple that we often heavily associate with Autumn. After all, as the temperature begins to drop, sandals and open-toed shoes can lead to cold feet quickly. Especially if you’re anything like me and your feet (and hands) become cold rapidly on colder days. Certainly, this is wear sheepskin and fleece-lined boots come in. But even a sleek pair of leather or suede boots provides sufficient coverage to prevent your toes from becoming too chilly. Whilst looking great with your Autumnal outfits.
My ankle boots are among my most-worn Autumnal wardrobe essentials when the temperature begins to drop. Ankle boots are often just enough to keep my feet comfortable, without the struggle of putting on a taller boot. But I also love a tall leather boot for a sleek and edgy look. And while I’ll typically purchase my Autumnal footwear in blacks, browns, and more neutral tones, you’re spoilt for choice in terms of boots. Some boots have high heels, some have no heels, and some are midway between. My only recommendation would be to avoid high-heeled boots unless you’re 100% confident walking in heels.
6 — Stockings
I absolutely love wearing dresses and skirts, and I have quite a robust collection of them. That said, I don’t want to stop wearing my dresses and skirts just because the temperature is dropping. But at the same time, I don’t want my legs to be completely exposed to the elements in the colder months. Which is why one of my top Autumnal (and Winter) wardrobe essentials is stockings. While they don’t necessarily keep my legs warm for long periods of time outdoors when the temperature drops below 40º F, they keep my legs comfortable as I head to the car. Stockings truly allow me to maintain my personal style year-round, so I never have to put my dresses away.
I also must say, stockings add a little extra pop to my outfit. Especially when I wear colorful ones. And I’ll be honest, I tend to wear them in the Spring and Summer as well, because I do bruise quite easily, and stockings help disguise them.
7 — Scarves and Cool Weather Accessories
Scarves, hats, gloves, and other cold-weather accessories are quite essential to have in your wardrobe for Autumn and Winter. Certainly, you want something that can give you a little extra warmth as the temperature begins to drop. But specifically, I love scarves in the Autumnal months as they are perfect for dressing up an otherwise plain T-shirt or sweater. Scarves add their own unique touch to your look, and you can even build your entire outfit around a unique scarf. They’re the perfect piece to add some extra dimension to your Autumnal outfits, whilst being easy to set aside if you get too warm.
I also must say, I love flat hats and berets as Autumnal accessories, and they’re amongst my Autumnal wardrobe essentials. They add just enough warmth to your look and give your outfit more interest. The same goes for leather and suede gloves for when you’re outdoors on chilly days. Heck, I’m tempted to look for a pair of leather gloves that are touchscreen compatible for indoors. Because cold hands come with the territory of the colder months for me.
8 — Plaid and Tweed
When it comes to Autumnal fashion, plaid is one of the very first patterns to come to mind. Whether it be a flannel shirt, wool coat, patterned skirt, or a scarf, plaid is such an iconic Autumnal wardrobe essential. Plaid adds so much visual interest and color to your look. The same goes for tweed, which I’ve come to love more recently. Not only is tweed quite a warm fabric that’s perfect for the lower temperatures of Autumn, but it also adds texture and dimension to your outfit. And when you have a tweed garment with a plaid pattern, it’s the ultimate Autumnal garment!
Honestly, plaid and tweed look so classy and elegant incorporated into your outfits in the colder months. They are iconic and timeless staples that you’ll be able to keep amongst your Autumnal wardrobe essentials for years to come.
Conclusion
One of the greatest things about Autumn is the fashion and how creative you can get with your Autumnal outfits. It’s certainly hard to deny that Fall fashion can be quite elegant and classy, whilst still being cozy. It’s also quite fun to work with layering, and putting together outfits that still look complete when you remove a few layers. And when you have the right Autumnal wardrobe essentials on-hand, it’s quite easy to put together some stunning outfits in the Fall. No matter what your personal style looks like, you are sure to find some lovely pieces to add to your Autumnal essentials when the shops begin rolling out their Fall collections.
And remember, fashion is always meant to be fun and personal. So be sure to look for pieces that speak to you. Rather than just what is trendy this Fall. Or even what’s classic for Autumn.
