It seems that as soon as August rolls around, most people are ready to begin embracing Autumn. Heck, some people are about ready to break out the autumnal decor the day after Independence Day in the USA. And while I’m a Summertime girl, who is never quite ready to let go of Summer, I certainly see where they are coming from. Autumn is a beautiful and whimsical season, even if I’m not personally in a rush to welcome it. I love Summer too much not to make the most of what’s left of it, up until the Autumnal Equinox in late September. But certainly, I’ll fully embrace Autumn when it comes time to celebrate Mabon.
Fall certainly deserves to have its moment. And when Autumn arrives, you can bet that I’m fully embracing Fall for as long as I possibly can. I’ll be holding on to some bits of Autumn into late December. Primarily because I’m not too fond of the season that comes after Autumn. But let’s not talk about that one yet. Let’s instead embrace all of the beauty that Autumn has to offer and indulge in the wonderful treats that it brings. Because there is so much to find joy in as the leaves begin to change colors.
The Colors and Scenery of Autumn
With the leaves changing colors, Autumn is an undeniably colorful and beautiful season. I always look forward to seeing the shades of yellow, orange, red, and brown as Fall reaches its peak. And that portion of Autumn where there’s a balance between the leaves on the trees and leaves on the ground is absolutely whimsical. The scenery of Autumn is the perfect backdrop for just about any cozy Autumnal activity. Or for taking some Autumnal photos, as Fall is undeniably the most photogenic season. But whether you choose to bring your camera out or not, it’s easy to appreciate Autumn’s beauty.
Going for a walk as the leaves are falling makes for a wonderful scenic way to clear your head on an October morning. Even just sitting on your back porch with a good book and an Autumnal drink can make for a lovely evening. Heck, I also love seeing the lovely colors on the trees from my window as I work at my desk. The Autumn leaves are beautiful, and there’s no right or wrong way to admire them.
There is something so calming about watching the leaves float to the ground in the breeze. Especially as Autumn reminds us that there is so much beauty in letting go. Perhaps journaling on your back patio about what it’s time for us to let go of could be a way to enjoy the scenery. While sincerely taking it in, and making meaning from the Fall season.
Cooler Weather and Rainy Vibes
I’m not going to lie, as a Summertime girly, I personally have mixed feelings about Autumnal weather. Ohio’s summers can be very hot, with heat indexes reaching into the high-90s, or even 100s on some days. So it’s certainly a delight when the extreme heat breaks in the Fall. But I also have significantly less tolerance to the cold than I do to the heat. Yet, I love it when the temperature falls within the 50º to 75º range. Early to mid-Autumn has the best temperatures for spending time outside, without sweating or freezing. Plus, both sundresses and sweaters can be equally as comfortable during the Fall.
Autumn also tends to come with rather rainy weather. Honestly, it can be quite gloomy with how often it rains and how little sunlight there is. But I love the sound of the rain in the evening. Plus, a rainy and dreary day also makes for the perfect excuse to stay in and do some cozy activities. Reading a book with a cup of hot apple cider is quite the treat on a rainy Autumn afternoon. And I must say, ASMR and brown noise can not compete with the sound of a Fall thunderstorm when I’m trying to sleep.
Fall Fashion
As the weather starts to cool down, and it becomes socially acceptable to start wearing sweaters again, I’m quite happy to break out some of my more Autumnal garments. Despite the fact that I tend to dress more based on my mood than the weather. But that’s beside the point. Especially when wearing sweaters, blazers, scarves, and boots comes with the territory of embracing Autumn. And as the “ber” months arrive, it becomes so much easier to find some gorgeous autumnal pieces to add to your wardrobe. Pieces that can either shine on their own or be layered with other Autumnal pieces.
I also must say that, while I do love the warmer shades and neutrals that come along with Fall fashion, you are by no means limited to them. Nor are you limited to certain fabrics or cuts. You can certainly work with your personal style when you’re building your Autumnal wardrobe. Honestly, Autumn is just another excuse to further diversify your style. And to use your creativity to create lovely, cozy looks.
The Flavors of Autumn
The flavorful foods and drinks of Fall are one of the first things that I find myself embracing about Autumn. I’ll even allow myself to enjoy them before Autumn officially starts in late September. Especially as some of the delightful treats of Autumn, particularly anything pumpkin flavored, are only available for so long. Pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin rolls are the epitome of Autumnal treats for me, so I’ll grab them in early September. Along with some apple cider and some apple crisp to enjoy after a day of soaking up what’s left of the Summer sun.
And as the temperature consistently begins to drop, there are so many delightful dishes to be enjoyed in the Fall. Pumpkin spice lattes, fresh-baked pies, and pumpkin rolls are just the beginning of the delightful treats that Autumn has to offer. Along with fresh apples, pears, grapes, cranberries, and pomegranates. But let’s not forget about the chilis, stews, warm grain bowls, and other hearty meals that we gravitate towards are the temperature drops. There are so many dishes to be enjoyed in Autumn. And the possibilities are endless when you get creative with the abundance of fruits and vegetables that come into season in the “ber” months.
Fall Holidays and Celebrations
Autumn has quite a few holidays and celebrations that are a lot of fun to partake in and enjoy. Celebrating Mabon at the Autumn Equinox is quite literally about embracing Autumn and the transitioning of the seasons. Even if you choose to celebrate Mabon independently, it can be quite a lovely way to purposely welcome Autumn. The same applies to Samhain (October 31 – November 1), if you follow the Wheel Of The Year. These celebrations encourage us to fully embrace what Autumn has to offer, as we transition from Summer to Autumn and into Winter. They also encourage us to reflect on what lessons we can learn from nature as the seasons change.
And of course, we can’t talk about Autumnal holidays without mentioning Halloween. Especially as most of the early excitement for Autumn in July and August tends to be centered around Halloween. And for very good reason, as it is such a fun holiday. The spooky season is just as exciting for children and adults alike. Between scary movies, spooky decorations, haunted houses, putting together costumes, and everything to do with Halloween, it’s a fun holiday. And you can celebrate the spirit of Halloween all through October. Although there’s really nothing stopping you from enjoying spooky things year-round.
I’d also like to give an honorable mention to Thanksgiving if you live in the United States or Canada. It is quite lovely to come together with loved ones for a grand meal. It also makes for another opportunity to intentionally practice gratitude and reflect on the year thus far. I also enjoy the deals I can get shopping online for Black Friday, often starting on Thanksgiving. Which makes it quite a transitional holiday into the Winter holiday season.
The Festivities and Activities of Autumn
It doesn’t necessarily have to be an Autumnal holiday to enjoy the wonderful festivities of the Fall. Perhaps, you could enjoy an afternoon at your local Fall festival, and even go on a hay ride. You could also visit your local farmer’s market and buy some fresh local fruits and vegetables while they’re in season. And going to your local apple orchard and going apple picking can make for a wonderful Fall day. Exploring a corn maze or a haunted house, or maybe a haunted corn maze, can also be quite the thrill. There are so many Autumnal activities that can be fun for people of all ages.
And embracing Autumn and its wonderful festivities doesn’t necessarily have to entail making elaborate plans. Simply going for a walk and admiring the scenery is a wonderful way to embrace the beauty of Autumn. On a rainy day, you can always stay in and bake some fresh Autumnal treats, as you watch your favorite Fall movies in the background. Perhaps, you could even carve a pumpkin or make some Autumnal crafts, and make your own Fall decor. And while raking the leaves may not be a particularly fun chore, it can be fun to get in touch with your inner child and jump into them. Just for fun!
Conclusion
Although I’m still clinging on to every bit of Summer that I have left, I’m certainly going to be embracing Autumn as it arrives. I certainly do have a soft spot for Fall, especially as a Scorpio Sun, born in October. Autumn is such a beautiful and colorful season, with so many wonderful festivities to indulge in. Let’s all make the most of what this transitional season has to offer. And perhaps, also take a moment to stop and think about the lessons that we can learn from this lovely season, as we watch the leaves fall. I’ll certainly be making the most of Autumn, because I know what comes after Autumn.
What are some of your favorite things about Autumn? Do you have any Autumnal traditions or celebrations of your own? What do you look forward to as the move as the “ber” months set in? (Or are you in the Southern Hemisphere, and the “ber” months are your Spring?) Is Fall truly your favorite season, or do you prefer another season? I’d love to hear all your Autumnal thoughts!

This is a wonderful post that sparks joy in me while reading it. I’m excited for the change in temperature, the warm and cozy treats and dishes.
